The challenge
Explore how AI could transform static stories and characters into living experiences. The studio wanted characters, quests, and relationships that could evolve alongside the player rather than simply follow predetermined scripts.
The narrative problem
Interactive stories have a familiar tension: the more authored the story, the less freedom the player has. The more freedom the player receives, the harder it becomes to preserve dramatic structure, emotional payoff, and thematic coherence.
Blind faith in generative AI makes that problem worse. It produces endless possibilities while diluting the meaning and emotional engagement at the center of the intended story.
The work
Brooke helped design frameworks that treated characters as evolving systems rather than static content. The work combined adaptive NPC behavior, dynamic quest structures, memory-driven interactions, and AI-assisted generation to expand player agency without surrendering emotional storytelling.
